Some Days, Getting Through Takes Everything

I sat on the edge of my bed this morning, staring at my shoes. There were bills to figure out, a difficult conversation I’d been putting off, and messages I didn’t know how to answer. I’d been trying hard to get my life moving in a better direction. That morning, I couldn’t see much evidence that it was working. I think that’s one of the hardest parts: putting in the effort while life keeps throwing things at you. You can be trying to make better choices and still have relationships that need repair. You can want to move forward and still feel ashamed of things you can’t undo. Sometimes another setback lands before you’ve caught your breath from the last one. On days like that, I miss the feeling of escaping. I remember the relief more easily than I remember what came afterward. It scares me how convincing that memory can be when I’m worn down. That morning, I picked up my phone. I almost sent my usual “I’m fine.” Instead, I wrote, “I’m having a rough day. Do you have a few minutes?” Sending it felt uncomfortable. I didn’t want to explain everything, and I didn’t have the energy to pretend I had a plan. We talked for a while. The bills were still there afterward. So was the conversation I needed to have. But someone knew how I was doing, and we agreed I’d check in again that evening. I put my shoes on. I ate something. Later, I made one of the calls I’d been avoiding. I still have a lot to work through. Some days I resent how much effort ordinary things take. I’m learning to tell someone sooner when I’m struggling, rather than waiting until I’ve shut everyone out. If you’re having one of those days, you don’t have to find the perfect words. “Today is hard” is somewhere to start.
