Begin with qualified guidance
A primary-care professional, licensed addiction clinician, or SAMHSA’s National Helpline can help identify an appropriate starting point. FindTreatment.gov lists treatment providers in the United States.
Questions to ask a program
- Is the program licensed or accredited, and by whom?
- Which licensed professionals provide care?
- How do you assess the appropriate level of treatment?
- Which evidence-based treatments and medications are available?
- How are mental-health and medical needs addressed?
- What is the complete cost, including services not covered by insurance?
- What support is available after the initial program ends?
Be cautious with pressure and promises
Be wary of guaranteed cures, pressure to travel immediately, vague answers about credentials or costs, and anyone asking for sensitive insurance information before explaining who they represent.
Recovery support continues
Treatment is one part of a longer process. Ongoing medical care, counseling, recovery-community support, stable housing, family support, and other services may all play a role.
